GETTING TO
PAMPLONA FOR THE FIESTA
Information
for the Buses and Trains change all the time so just use
this as an indication of the possible times.
BY CAR:
From Madrid and Barcelona, it takes about four hours to
Navarra.
If you come from Madrid, take the N-II road
up to Medinaceli (Soria), where you should get the
detour to pass through Soria. When you arrive at
Castejón (Navarra), you should take the A-15, a
motorway that leads straight to Pamplona.
The fastest option coming from Barcelona is to
take the motorway towards Lleida-Tarragona. You
should follow directions to Lleida when you get to El
Vendrell (Tarragona), a short distance after Vilafranca
del Penedés. From this point, follow the A-2
until you go a little beyond Tudela, where you should
take the A-15 straight to Pamplona.
Coming from France, the closest border crossing is
Hendaya-Irún, an hour away from the capital of
Navarra. From that point, you can choose to come from San
Sebastián (more kilometers, better road) or to go
across the North of Navarra, through the tunnels of Belate.
Those who cross the border through La Jonquera should go
as far as Barcelona and then follow the same directions
described above.
IF YOU DO
COME BY CAR THEN PARKING CAN BE A NIGHTMARE!
If you
finally decide to come to Pamplona by car, you should
consider that parking is not easy at all at this time,
especially at the weekend. Unless you stay in a hotel
with its own parking space, you will find it really
difficult.
First of all, do not even think of parking close to the
centre of the city. All the Old Quarter is closed to
traffic as well as some streets in the centre area of
the city called Segundo Ensanche ("Second
Urban Expansion Area"). You are advised to leave the
car outside the central area although you will have to
walk a little bit to get into the centre of the festival
activity. Distances are really short in Pamplona and this
does not cause any trouble at all.
There are also many options of payment parking lots
around the central area and the City Council fits out
different spaces for free parking. Unlike the rest of the
year, the City Council allows parking in the middle
sections of different avenues, always signalled as
parking spaces, so as not to infringe any parking rule.
The tow truck (tel. 948-174000) works during San Fermín
and it costs 8.000 pesetas to recover your car and a fine
of around 16.000 pts. (although the amount varies
according to the offence).
BY BUS:
There are daily bus connections from Alicante,
Granada, Barcelona (from Nord and Sants bus stations
with the option of stops in Lleida), Bilbao, Burgos,
Peñíscola (stopping at Cambrils and Salou), Gijón
(Oviedo), Sabiñanigo (Jaca, Huesca), Irún,
Jaén, Lleida-Tarragona, Logroño, Madrid (from the
station of CONDA in Alenza Street), San Sebastián,
Santander, Vigo (Pontevedra-Orense-Burgos), Vitoria
and Zaragoza. There are also daily links with Badajóz,
Bejar, Cáceres, León, Mérida, Plasencia, Salamanca,
Valladolid and Zamora through Burgos.
However, during these days there are usually extra
buses (as well as trains). So the most practical
option would be to ask for information at the coach
station of departure or at the station in Pamplona
(948-223854).
BY TRAIN:
Daily trains arrive in Pamplona from Hendaya
(through Ir™n and San Sebastián), Barcelona
(Lleida), Madrid, A Coruña (Vigo, Orense, Lugo,
León, Palencia y Burgos), Vitoria, Zaragoza y
Alicante (Valencia and Salou). However, during
Sanfermines some routes are intensified with extra trains
according to demand, so it is better to ask directly to Renfe
or through their information telephone number
(902-240202).
To come from abroad by train, the best option is
to take the high-speed train form Paris to
Hendaya, where you can go on by train or take a bus
in Irún (2 kilometers from the French border
town).
BY PLANE:
There are daily flights from Madrid, Barcelona
and Valencia (from the last one except Saturdays and
Sundays). To come from abroad, apart form connect flights
arriving at these airports, the closest to the capital of
Navarra is the airport of Bilbao (an hour and a half away
by car) with flights to almost all European capitals.
Another option is the airport of Biarritz
(France), at about one hour away from Pamplona by car,
and there is a bus to San Sebasti·n. For more
